What Are MSDS’s?
MSDS’s,
or Material Safety Data Sheets, are informational documents required by OSHA
regulations for work-place employee exposure potential.
MSDS’s
are created by the manufacturers of the particular products, substances,
materials, or other potential exposure mediums that might be found in a work
environment.
Because
employees have a “right-to-know” about potential risks to their health and
well-being, employers are required to maintain up to date records and access to
all MSDS documentation for potential exposure issues that might be found at a particular facility, work area, or other
employment venue.
In
theory, then, employees working at food processing plants, cosmetics
manufacturers, household product makers and the like must be given access to
all the chemicals, artificial substances, and other ingredients they might be exposed to while they work to create the
products to be sold to consumers. Thus, MSDS information (see
sample below for what OSHA requires) is certainly available. However, it is not easy for non-employees to
gain access to it in many cases.
The
list below represents a summation of the OSHA MSDS information requirements that manufacturers are supposed to include.
